The Lower Eastern Shore National History Day regional contest includes separate county contests for Dorchester, Somerset, and Wicomico Counties.  The contests take place at the same time with the same judges, but entries are ranked only with other entries from the same county/

The contest is sponsored by the Salisbury University Libraries and the Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts as well as by the public school systems of each of the three counties.

For more information on the contest, see the Lower Eastern Shore National History Day LibGuide.

Judge Criteria

Judges are an important part of the History Day experience. You don't need to be a history professor or teacher to be a judge, but you should have some understanding of history and historical research and be interested in working with young people.  You will be reviewing the students' entries and (in a normal year, but not this year) interviewing the students.  You need to be willing to write some substantive comments about the students' work rather than just telling them, "Good job!"  The feedback is important, whether or not they are advancing to the state contest.  If they are advancing, they are able to revise their entries completely--they have to keep the same topic, but otherwise, they can totally re-do their entry.  Your comments can play an important role in how they do that.  And if they are not advancing, your comments help them understand what they did well and how they can improve for next year.
